Set Design and Décor

2002 - 2022

I was formerly trained in ceramics and sculpture at Emily Carr university of Art and Design, where I learned to think through form, texture, and composition by working with my hands. That early foundation shaped the way I see the world, less as something to be drawn and more as something to be built, adjusted, and felt in real time. My first job when I moved to LA was as a Ceramics instructor and gallery manager. The woman whom I worked for, Patti Marcus, was deeply rooted in the California Arts and Crafts movement and she gave me the gift of meeting some influential artists like Beatrice Wood and Tony Marsh.

When the opportunity arose to create the sets for the opening scene of the movie Titanic, I was mesmerized by the world of set decoration. This experience opened the door to a new world of designing gardens on huge sound stages, desert roads and mountain overlooks. Over time, that sensibility carried me beyond the studio stages and into the landscape.

What began as an exploration of objects evolved into shaping environments and composing with stone, soil and plant material. My process remains intuitive and tactile guided by placement, proportion and responsiveness to what's in front of me, allowing each garden to emerge much like a piece of sculpture, layered, immersive, and alive.
